F.A.Q.

How can I get in touch with a mod?

Answer: You can reach us by leaving a question or comment in the drop box. Or, you can send us a direct email at beauxbatonsmod@gmail.com. OR, you can reach either mod on aim. Jen is mmaaddasrabbits. Michelle is perversewriter.

What's going on in game?

Answer: Academie de Magie is a social game. It focuses on character development and the wide range of relationships between characters. Story arcs will be introduced into the game periodically. There will be dances, quidditch games, class assignments, trips into Beauxcoteau, and anything else the mods - or the players - think up. Though, it's important to note that as there is no longer a war going on and Beauxbatons is very isolated, the characters will be responsible for creating most of their own plot.

What characters are playable?

Answer: We're allowing only years 5-7 to be adopted. There's a fifth house, so more characters are available. Also, forth years are rarely played and even more rarely have any significant plot.

How is time handled?

Answer: Academie de Magie is played entirely in real time. It's the same day and year.

If the game is in France ...

Answer: Assume that all the characters are speaking French unless otherwise noted. If the characters are speaking English simply indicate it at the bottom of the entry in brackets. Also, because they are speaking French there should not, regrettably, be any British slang.

Also, because these are French students, we'd prefer that their names be typical of France. Clearly, names aren't as nation specific as they once were, but it'd add a nice element to the game. There are traditional male and female French names here. Here is another set of male names, and the female set is here.

What is the French equivalent of ...?

Answer: The Wizarding culture in France centers around Paris. The French Ministry of Magic is set there, as well as the train that delivers the students to Beauxbatons. Tillinghast Allee is the commercial sector of Wizarding Paris. It would be where students shop for their school supplies, ect. And the Indicateur is the main Wizarding newspaper in France. Wizarding currency is the same.

What's up with the dorms?

Answer: The castle is set up differently, to begin with. The dorms are not divided by House. Instead, they're divided by year. For example, all seventh years are on one level with a shared common room, bath, and study lounge. There are individual rooms for each gender of each House, but everything is on the same floor. Unlike Hogwarts, both male and female students are free to enter each other's rooms and bedrooms. For a full explanation - and shiny floor plans - see our Grounds page. Also, because the five students sharing a room (same House, gender and year) are split into two small bedrooms, we've Assigned Beds.

How is the class schedule different?

Answer: Beauxbatons students take their OWLs after their sixth year, rather than fifth. That means that sixth years are still taking all the fundamental classes and their classes are broken up by Houses. It's not until seventh year that their schedules become more specialized. Class schedules are found here.

What is the nearest town?

Answer: Beauxcoteau is a Wizarding town very near the school. Field trips, weekend excursions and students willing to risk detention for a meal or stiff drink will all be heading to Beauxcoteau. All the information on Beauxcoteau can be found here.

How much power do the Prefects and Head Boy/Girl have?

Answer: The Heads and the Prefects all have the power to penalize and award points. Justification for point changes must be reported here so that the point total can be changed. It also allows the professors to see who's causing trouble and which Prefects are abusing their power or letting too much slide. In addition, both Prefects and the Heads are able to give detentions, either with themselves or the Grounds Keeper, Urbain Tichbourne.

How else might House Points be given or taken?

Answer: Professors are everywhere. Anything done in unlocked journal entries or in public areas can be held against students. So, if your character wants to start a fight or sneak off grounds after curfew, keep in mind that they might be seen and sentenced to whatever cruel punishment the mods can think of.

Is there Quidditch?

Answer: Of course. All Quidditch information is located here.

So, about ships....

Answer: We're a het, slash and fem-slash friendly community. We just ask that you keep it reasonably realistic and maybe create a little build up. Also, keep in mind that we really, really don't want to close down any character types, so consider trying to keep your characters in balance. It's usually a given in any game that there are more girls than there are straight boys. So, if you have three girls, consider taking a boy. Or, if you have a gay boy, consider taking a straight one.

These Houses are confusing. What do they mean again?

Answer: In Beauxbatons there are five houses instead of four. Four of them may seem somewhat familiar though.

Garnier Traits: Elegant, proper, concerned with appearances, socialites, gentle, elaborate, eloquent, thinkers, planners, calculating, even tempered.

Fortescue Traits: Scholarly, intellectual, curious, dedicated, ambitious, independent, clever, introverted, witty, organized, planners.

Devereaux Traits: Calculating, manipulative, elitists, sly, cunning, provocative, blunt, critical thinkers, self preserving.

Chevalier Traits: Adventurous, curious, doers, active, explorative, leaders, physical, playful, rowdy, carefree, risk taking, brave.

Ballentine Traits: Friendly, open minded, accepting, fun loving, loyal, honest, devoted, social, dependent, followers, trustyworthy, caring, helpful, protective.

What is the drinking age?

Answer: The drinking age is sixteen in France, so the local taverns will serve them. Of course, Beauxbatons is an alcohol free school. So, if your character has alcohol or is found intoxicated they will be punished.

How are the students sorted?

Answer: Like Hogwarts, Beauxbatons has a Sorting Hat.

What do they wear?

Answer: Beauxbatons has a uniform rather than robes. Robes can still be worn outside, on field trips, or to outdoor classes like Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. But, for the most part, uniforms are worn during school hours and casual wear is worn afterward.

Female Uniforms - A white short sleeved shirt and knee length navy blue pleated skirt. Over that, there's a navy blue blazer and a navy blue tie with thin stripes of house color. The look is finished off with white knee high socks and black mary janes.

Male Uniforms - They wear a white long sleeved shirt, grey slacks and a nazy blue blazer. Their tie is also navy blue with thin stripes of house color, and they wear black shoes with grey socks.
